PLANNING YOUR JOURNEY

I. PLANNING YOUR JOURNEY

1. Last year Maria Gomis and Carmina Solans wanted to visit Scotland, so they wrote this letter to the British Tourist Authority to get information about this country:

Dear Sir or Madam
Please can you send us some information about holidays in Scotland? We would like to go camping next summer. Can you tell us about public transport, interesting sites to visit and any events that take places in the summer in Scotland? We would also be very grateful if you could send us information leaflets about “Bed & Breakfast” facilities.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
Maria Gomis, Carmina Solans

ACTIVITY::

—1. Write a similar letter to the Tourist Authority of the country of your choice.

Plan a motorbike tour
In 1999 College friends from Boston Jacqui Smith and Carmen Álvarez toured the U.S.A. by motorbike. Here is their itineray:
Day From ... to ...

1         Boston to NewYork
2         500 km north-west to Niagara Falls
3-4     750 km west to Chicago
5-8     1.800 km west to Salt Lake City
9         500 km south to the Grand Canyon
10-11 1.000 km. west to San Francisco
12       600 km south to Los Angeles
13       Los Angeles to Boston

ACTIVITIES:

—2. Plan a motorbike tour of the country of your choice. First, make a list of the places you want to visit. Then draw a map and mark their positions; you may like to illustrate them! Work out the most logical route for visiting the places and draw it on the map.

—3. Write an itinerary. Remember that the maximum distance you can cover in one day is 600 kilometres.

WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY LIKE?

Jacqui and Carmen tell us here about their experience:

The trip lasted thirteen days, and we travelled more than 5.000 kilometres. We visited several major cities and landmarks..
We flew from Boston to New York, and we set off early the following morning. We travelled north-west towards the Great Lakes, and arrived at the Niagara Falls before evening. The next day we headed west for two days and spent the fourth night of our trip in Chicago.
We continued to go west until, after four days, we arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah. From there, we travelled south to the Grand Canyon National Park, a journey of nearly 500 kilometres, it took us a whole day! The Grand Canyon was amazing. It was the best part of our trip.
Next, we continued our journey westwards across the States, arriving in San Francisco on day eleven.
On the last day, we followed the coast south to Los Angeles. From there we flew back to Boston. We were exhausted, but immensely happy: we had made it!

ACTIVITY:

—4. Now you are back home. Tell us about your experience, like Jacqui and Carmen.
