BE QUIET! SAVE THE FORESTS SAVE WATER SAVE ENERGY

BE CAREFUL OF FIRES WHAT'S IT MADE OF? GET HEALTHY!

BE CAREFUL WITH PLASTICS TAKE YOUR RUBBISH WITH YOU RECYCLE!

Before anything is thrown away in your house, think about what kind of rubbish it is. In fact, as much as more than seventy-five per cent of the rubbish produced in our homes could be recycled. Some things that can be recycled are glass, aluminium, plastic and paper. If you don't have a place to recycle things in your neighbourhood, ask your municipality to get recycling bins

Most of the earth's water is salt water. In fact, only three per cent of the earth's water is fresh, so make sure that you save this water. There are many things that can be done to save water. For example, you can have showers instead of baths. You can wash the dishes in a bowl in the sink rather than under a running tap. Are you aware that every time a tap is left running while you brush your teeth, about sixty litres of water are wasted?

Thousands of trees were cut down in tropical forests last year. When you buy anything from wood, make sure it isn't made from a hardwood such as mahogany or teak . Instead, buy softwoods such as pine and whitewood. Softwood trees grow quickly and new trees are planted as soon as older ones are cut. Another way to save the forest is to recycle paper. If more paper is recycled, fewer trees will be cut down to make new paper. One tone of recycled paper will save seventeen trees!

When you go shopping, always take a bag with you. Don't put your sandwiches into plastic bags. Most plastics will be found unchanged on the ground in another 100 years. Sandwiches and other foods that are put in reusable containers will help keep the country clean.

Most products say what they are made of. Don't buy anything that may harm the environment. For example, some aerosol cans damage the ozone layer in the atmosphere, because they contain CFC. But this is not the only problem: some of the substances used in aerosol cans may damage your lungs; as litter, aerosols are dangerous, since they can burst if they are burned, and they cannot be recycled.

Litter can make our country an ugly and unpleasant place to live in. Even worse, wild animals and birds are often harmed and killed by litter. Last year many animals were killed when they ate the ring-pulls from cans. Others were badly hurt by broken bottles. So if you go on a trip, make sure that you always put your rubbish in a bin or take it home.

A lot of pollution is caused by all the electricity we use. Don't turn on electrical appliances that you don't need. For example, don't keep your TV on if you aren't watching it. Make sure that you turn off the lights when you go out of a room. Only ten per cent of the energy used by a light bulb is actually transformed into light. The rest gets lost.

When you go on a picnic, be careful to put out cooking fires and cigarettes. Thousands of hectares of trees are destroyed by forest fires every year. In 1994 there were 19.215 forest fires in Spain. 432.252 hectares of forest were burnt down.

How can getting healthy help the environment? Easily! Instead of going everywhere by car, take your bike or walk. You'll find that you'll be healthier and fitter, and that the environment will be cleaner. Remember that, in one hour, a car consumes the same amount of oxygen eight hundred trees produce in a whole day!

Noise pollution is becoming more and more serious. People live very close to each other and often make a lot of noise which disturbs their neighbours. A lot of noise is also made by passing vehicles. People become very nervous and don't sleep well because of the noise. When people in Spain were asked which type of pollution was most serious for them, more than eighty per cent listed noise pollution in first place. So, when possible, try to avoid noise and produce less noise yourself.
